Do you often wake up on the wrong side of the bed? Well, that really depends on what the right side is for you, doesn't it? Would you be surprised if we told you that your preference when it comes to your favourite side of the bed isn't purely a coincidence? Are you ready to find out why your favourite side of the bed is actually your favourite?

Who are people who sleep on the left?

Well, first of all, results gathered in a Premier Inn Research suggest that they are supposed to be a lot more cheerful and positive than those who sleep on the right side, so if you're feeling blue, you might want to change the side of bed you sleep on. People sleeping on the left are also more capable of accepting challenges that life throws at them – after all, there's nothing a positive outlook on life couldn't solve, right? Left-side sleepers also tend to be calmer, more confident and are happier with their jobs. 

And who are the people on the right?

They might be a bit less cheerful, but they generally tend to make more money than their left-side partners, which is definitely not something to be sad about, right? However, right-side sleepers do tend to wake up a bit crankier and generally have a slightly less positive outlook on life. If you prefer to sleep on the right side, it might be time to reconsider your choices – unless of course you'd like to finally get that raise you've been after for ages! And here's another fun fact: if you're a man, you're 14 per cent more likely to sleep on the right side of the bed. Seems like women really get the best of everything ...

Is there a wrong and a right side of bed?

Well, we definitely know that there is the right side of the bed – but is the other one therefore wrong or simply left? Suprisingly, more than 25 per cent of UK residents believe that there actually is a wrong and a right side of the bed – although they are not unanimous which side that is. However, more than 75 per cent believe that it would be impossible for them to catch a great night's sleep on the opposite side of the bed. Let's hope they never find a partner who feels the same way about the same side of the bed, right? 

Regretably some people weren't that lucky: about 10 per cent of couples actually argue about the sides of the bed – we just hope that they don't have to have a huge fight about it every single night. 

And why do we sleep where we sleep?

What is it that drives us towards a specific side of a bed? Is it truly only our preference? Is it purely a coincidence? Or is there some deeper meaning behind it all?

While writing his book Two in a Bed: The Social System of Couple Bed Sharing, Paul C. Rosenblatt spoke to a number of couples about their sleep habits and their reasoning behind picking a specific side of the bed. It turned out that our choice of the bed basically depends on eight primary reasons:

  • old habits: if you've been sleeping on a specific side of the bed your entire life, it's difficult to break that pattern;
  • claustrophobia: if you're tend to feel trapped in small spaces, you're more likely to pick a side of the bed that is more roomey and spacious;
  • bathroom breaks: if one of the partners tends to visit the bathroom more often during the night, they are likely to pick a side closer to the bathroom;
  • protectiveness: many men prefer to sleep on the side of the bed that is closest to the door, so that they can protect their partners from potential intruders;
  • wake up time: partners who wake up earlier tend to sleep on the outside side of the bed, so they don't wake up their sleepy-head partner when crawling out of the bed;
  • parenting: the partner on baby duty that night generally sleeps on the outside;
  • pain: if you tend to experience pain during sleep, you usually select the side that brings you fewer pains and aches;
  • temperature: sleeping closer to the radiator, air conditioning or a window is a huge factor when selecting your favourite part of the bed.
